2013 in Hong Kong Dramas

I am kind of behind in getting out end of year posts! I need better time management for next year!

For those of you who are connected my blog for quite a while now would know that out of out the dramas that I watch, it is Hong Kong dramas which I frequent. This isn’t because I enjoy it more than dramas from other countries (which is certainly not the case) but because I grew up watching HK dramas. Furthermore, I always have HK dramas physically available on hand whereas for the other dramas, I have to go and search for it.

It is obvious that the quality of TVB dramas is going downhill, but nonetheless, I still continue watch HK dramas. 2013 was a very disappointing year for HK dramas with no dramas standing out of the crowd no achieving high ratings. Regardless of all this, for those of you who watch HK dramas, I would like to know which were favourite dramas of 2013. Please take an opportunity to vote below and comment which were your favourite and least favourite series of 2013! (: I look forward to hearing from you!

Oh, please vote before you read my favourites for 2013, since it would influence your decision.

My top three favourites for 2013 are:

The Hippocratic Crush II (AKA On Call 36 Hours II)

Obviously it did not live up to its prequel but I still really enjoyed it. The biggest issue was that there was too much characters and the focus shifted away from where it should be. I don’t mind seeing the development of the supporting and side characters but they had much more focus than the main characters! This was a huge let down because what I really wanted out of the sequel was to see the relationship between Cheung Yat Kin/Yat Kin Tau (Kenneth Ma) and Fan Ji Yu/Yu Jai (Tavia Yeung) and Lau Bing Chan/Benjamin (Benjamin Yuen) and Hung Mei Suet (Mandy Wong) but they just did not receive enough focus! However, as a whole, I really enjoyed how each of the characters were developed. I also loved the medical focus, even if it was related people falling sick one after the other.

Brother’s Keeper

I thoroughly enjoyed this drama. If I had to choose, this would be my drama of the year (HK drama wise). The writing was the best thing about this drama. It kept you on your toes, wondering how exactly the ending would turn out to be like right from the first ep. The characters were all very well-written, especially Kiu Tin Sung/Sam (Ruco Chan) and Ruco also played this character out perfectly which made watching the drama all that more enjoyable. It was heartbreaking to see the person that Sam was turning into, especially how he kept wanting more and more to prove that he was capable of making his girlfriend, Cheuk Jing/Rachel (Linda Chung) happy. Ruco and Linda had great chemistry which really made you feel for the person that Sam had turned into.

Triumph in the Skies II

I enjoyed this because it was light and airy. The plot was decently written and so were the characters. There were lots of character developments which was nice as it allowed you to really get to know the characters. There were some crazy romantic relationships that I could have done without but all the other relationships were really developed. Coco Ling (Nancy Wu)’s bond with her two “brothers”, Samuel Tong (Francis Ng) and Issac Tong (Ron Ng) were one of these relationships, and probably my most favourite relationship of the drama. There also lots of great acting which I greatly appreciated.

Didn’t watch any HK dramas this year but the 3 main titles you mentioned are recognizable since I heard a lot about them!

Well, I guess that is a good thing since no of the HK dramas this were up to standard. Ahaha, these were my fave this year and they’re not even that great!

Haha my favorite one so far is Inbound Troubles. I might add Bounty Lady if it doesn’t drag.

Heard Will Power is good. What’s your thought on that series?

Nahhh, I don’t anticipate them. They don’t look appealing to me but I look forward to seeing Nancy’s role in CCM.

I guess Will Power was alright, but I didn’t really enjoy it. They tried to do the humour thing but it didn’t work for me.
