Dark Horses Win Big at the TVB Anniversary Awards

I am so surprised this year! Shocking, shocking wins but the wins were well deserved. I am speechless with how the wins turned out but I am happy for the way that it turned out to be. I am now a big fan of this half-public voting system. Not only was the awards very fair, but it also recognised well-deserving talents. The series this year have only been mediocre at best (the average rating was only 30) but there was a number of solid performances. All of the award winners were justifiable which makes this award all that more meaningful. The ceremony was held last night, 16 December 2013, from 8:00pm – 10:30pm at TVB City and was hosted by Carol Cheng and Amigo Chui with most nominees in attendance.

The awards/top 5 nominations went home to four of the most talked about series of the year, i.e Triumph in the Skies IIBrother’s KeeperThe Hippocratic Crush II (AKA On Call 36 Hours II) and Bounty Lady. These also happen to be my favourite series of the year and I do think that the performances in these series were the best of the year. Kristal Tin took home Best Actress and Most Popular Female Character for her role in BK which I loved and really enjoyed watching. She was truly well deserving for these awards. She was a dark horse but managed to come out in front. Dayo Wong put on a spectacular performance in BL that was truly worthy of Best Actor. However, I wouldn’t have minded if either of the top 5 Best Actors took home the trophy because I thought that they all pulled out truly deserving performances. The Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress award winners where completely unexpected but I am so happy for the wins. I was hoping that Elena Kong would take home Best Supporting Actress but I never thought she would be able to do it. It has nothing to do with her abilities but rather with the BTS tactics so it came as a huge shock for me when I heard that she took home this award. Best Supporting Actor was just as shocking but again, it was a deserving win. All the award winners were very well deserving this year, even Eliza Sam for her Most Improved Female Artiste win. I wanted Grace Wong to win but nonetheless, you could really see the that Eliza made series after series.

All in all, I am ecstatic with these wins. This was definitely one of the most-deserving winners list that I have seen in recent time.

No award ceremony is ever complete without the red carpet fashion. Check it out!

Kate Tsui wore a shimmery dress which really was conservative yet allowed her neckline to be shown off. The only problem that I had with it was that I found it a tad too long for her.

Now that’s a perfect outfit for a best actress. Kristal Tin went for simplicity by pairing her white dress with minimal jewellery. All was perfect for her except for her black shoes which seemed too heavy for such a light outfit.

I’m not a fan of the dress that Linda Chung chose but it looks good on her. I really loves how it defines her waist. Her red accents from her lips and nails ties the outfit together really nicely.

IMO, The best and cutest on-screen couple of the year. Tavia Yeung and Kenneth Ma once again complemented each other perfectly. Again, Tavia stuck on the safe side opting for a cute creamy-white dress. I love how her hairstyle matches the softness of her dress. This time around, Kenneth didn’t go to bizarre with his outfit choice. He went simple black with a textures blazer.

What exactly are you wearing there Niki Chow? It’s like her dress tried too hard to be edgy and girly. The collar looks like it is chocking her and the cut-outs just doesn’t work for the dress. Bosco Wong‘s maroon suit isn’t really flattering on him. It isn’t the suit that is the problem but the colour. The colour looks way to old on him. He should have went with black.

Myolie Wu is the girl who rock up in a suit and make it fitting for such a ceremony. The suit is really flattering on her. I actually think the long length of the arms helps her to achieve this look.

Sticking with her bubbly, princess-y image, Eliza Sam wore a creamy-white dress with a puffy skirt bottom. I like that she didn’t wear a necklace with this because if she did it wouldn’t have looked so bubbly and princess-y.

Liking Vincent Wong‘s look, it just works in all ways for him. I want to like Nancy Wu‘s dress but I don’t. I like the skirt bottom of it but not the top of it. However, she wears it with confidence which makes the dress work for her.

The dress is really beautiful on Sharon Chan. She might have overdone it a bit with all that bling on her but nonetheless, she managed to pull off a very elegant look.

I don’t think the strip of cloth across the shoulders and the sheer sleeve is doing Elaine Yiu‘s dress any favours.

The hostess of the night, Carol Cheng, wore a light purple-grey dress and a very large statement necklace. I think the outfit looked too sweet for her age.

Katy Kung‘s dress was a bit too much. It was too puffy, too short and had too much layers. Though, she looked very sweet in it.

Sire Ma looked very elegant and pretty in her dress. The dress was very nice. It wasn’t overly dramatic or anything like that. There was just enough lace which was enough to give it that elegant look. I think the lace arm cuff was a really nice addition to the dress.

A very nice outfit there Wayne Lai!It fitted him really well and helped to give off a cheery charisma about him.

Ummm, what are you wearing Ron Ng!? It looks like he has a picnic blanket on him! Maybe lose the blanket and tone down on the red next time.

Ruco Chan‘s outfit looks like it has a lot going on but surprisingly, he pulls it off well. I don’t know if it is just me or not, but he looks less tanner than when he was in Malaysia for the TVB Star Awards.

Another stunner of the night! Elena Kong was very beautiful in her red dress with a a revealing back. However, her partner Ben Wong was another story. My biggest problem with his outfit was with his pants and shoes. That is not fitting for such a ceremony.

They are so adorable together! I would love to see another drama of them starring as a couple. Benjamin Yuen was easily the best dressed man of the night. His suit was very sleek and fitting. He was just perfect in it. Mandy Wong‘s red dress looked amazing on her! The cutting is very nice and I like how it has a slit for her to show her legs.

Not a fan of the outfits worn by Kathy Chow or Lawrence Ng. Kathy’s outfit didn’t for her body. It would have worked better if it didn’t have those big arms. Lawrence’s outfit was ruined by his grey pants. It just didn’t work for him.

Louise Lee looked graceful in her blue attire. Moses Chan opted for the simple option, but maybe it was too simple. He should have at least wore a bow or a tie. He should have also gone with a shorter pair of pants.

Oscar Leung‘s is saying lots of words to me. I like his red shirt to his black outfit, but I wasn’t so sure of the pants. Is it even pants? I thought it was a skirt! Grace Wong was very graceful in her white dress. I loved the raining diamonds. It kept the dress simple but pushed it up a level.

After a year of record highs (complaints) and lows (ratings), guess TVB has to take the heat off by giving people what they want. Snarky netizens can’t possibly complain if Best Actor goes to the “God” status Dayo. I am so so skeptical of these awards especially after last year. Guess all the big names are leaving anyway so there’s no point in using an award to exchange for a contract renewal. Hrm I sound so bitter, this brings back a lot of bad memories.

OKKK… thanks for the red carpet photos, I missed the beginning of the show lol. All I can say is what the heck is Ron Ng wearing?
