My Opinion on Boss & Me

Boss & MeThis drama is soooooo cute and sweet and literally melted my heart with all the sweetness that was there! I just couldn’t stop watching it and saw there hours on end watching one ep after another ep. I haven’t marathoned through a drama in such a long time but it feels so good to be able to do so. It’s been a good two months since I haven’t dramaed but watching this drama immediately revived the drama heart that laid dormant inside me. It’s quite safe to say that I lurve this drama and I’m just glad that I was encounter such a drama! Boss & Me is actually based off the internet novel by Gu Man (顾漫) called Come and Eat, Shan Shan which, from reviews that I have heard, seems to be an excellent adaptation. I haven’t read the novel but when I have time I will be sure to get my hands on it and a few of Gu Man’s other novels!

Boss and Me tells of a lowly white-collar employee, Xue Shan Shan (Zhao Li Ying)’s romance with her boss Feng Teng (Hans Zhang). It’s your modern take on Cinderella on paper but Boss and Me is so much more than that and definitely wasn’t anything that I expected (considering that I have never read the novel). They are two very different people with completely polar socioeconomic statuses but their difference in socioeconomic statuses did not limit their relationship. Instead, it just became a small obstacle that only brought them closer together. Boss and Me is a heartwarming story of how two people found their hearts falling for one another which oozes with more and more sweetness the more and more that you watch of it.

Boss & Me

Boss & MeIt was Shan Shan’s rare blood donation that initiated her romance with her boss. It was because of this that she started receiving healthy meals from the Feng family and subsequently, with her frequent lunch dates with Feng Teng, their relationship blossomed. The original novel title exclusively makes mention of Shan Shan coming to eat, and coming to eat was what she did. First it was special lunch deliveries, then it was her solo lunch dates on Feng Teng’s balcony, then it was lunch dates with Feng Teng in his office and then when they were dating, it was lunch dates at home. The more they ate, the more their relationship blossomed and the more they anticipate their lunch dates together. I especially loved it when Feng Teng would get agitated whenever he had meetings that made him late for his lunch “dates” with Shan Shan (aka, watching her eat through the window). It’s so cute!

Boss & MeWith Shan Shan and Feng Teng stemming from families with completely polar opposite socioeconomic statuses, one would think that it would be this very factor that limits the OTP from being together but that is not the case here. Boss & Me was far, far from that. While their socioeconomic statuses did play a contributing factor to their relationship, it didn’t go as far as to limit their relationship. She is together with him not because of his status or wealth, but because he stole her heart and can make happy. They knew the backlash they would receive from being together, especially Shan Shan, but that did not stop them from being together. It was their love for one another that mattered and that was what was of importance to them. Despite scrutiny from the people around their relationship, they jumped through all their obstacles together and in doing so, they realised that no-one or anything can tear them apart because they are meant for each other.

Boss & Me

IBoss & Me

Boss & MeShan Shan and Feng Teng cannot get any more cuter than what they are (actually they can, lol). They are just oozing with cuteness! I love so much as a couple and I just can’t get enough of them! I really love how their relationship came about. It was very, very sweet and couldn’t have been done any better. They have a very adoring relationship and they care for each other very much. He fell for her almost instantaneously the first time she arrived up to his balcony for lunch and then more and more until she completely consumed his heart. He doesn’t say and neither does he show it, but it is a clear fact that she stole his heart very early on in their relationship. I found it so adorable how he would wait for her to arrive and eat lunch “with” her and then how as their relationship progressed he would watch her pick out his food for him. He just likes poking fun at her doesn’t he? He might be a bit persistent on certain decisions but he always recognises that she is a woman in her own right and pushes her to greater extent. He pushes her to become a more confident woman who isn’t afraid to let the world know that he is her man.

Boss & MeThere are just some guys who captivates my heart the moment I see them and Hans is one of these guys. Not only does he have a handsome face and can act, but he also has a very mesmerising voice. If you have read my S.O.P Queen recaps, you will know that I was crazy in love with his voice! I still am, and I am so glad that this drama wasn’t dubbed! It would have been so weird to hear another voice on him! The drama (novel) is told in Shan Shan’s perspective so Feng Teng was not as fleshed out as Shan Shan. I felt that Feng Teng has quite a two-dimensional, flat personality, however, despite so, Hans did a great job in portraying him and that really helped to enhance Shan Shan’s side of the story.

Boss & Me

Boss & Me
I love Shan Shan. She is such a cute and bubbly character! We got to witness her incredible journey of growth. She was once a lowly employee with no background running around doing mundane tasks for her employees who would have dreamt that she would have a romance with her boss but fate has its ways! We got to watch her grow from being an insecure, reserved girl to a confident and earnest woman. I really love those moments when she would stand up and admit that Feng Teng is hers and hers only, especially in the last ep when she admitted that Feng Teng is her fiancée. You go gal!

Boss & MeI feel quite indifferent towards Yuan Li Shu (Lvy Li). She harbours a one-sided love towards Feng Teng but could never muster up the courage to confess to him verbally. But when Shan Shan came into the picture, that all changed and she was more than ready to fight for his love, except he has already given it all to Shan Shan. She tries to inflict tension to Feng Teng and Shan Shan’s relationship but she isn’t one of those homewreckers. She wants Feng Teng to like her and she continues to pursue after his heart despite numerous rejections. However, despite this, she does have good intentions towards Shan Shan and really does try to help her to match up to him. I guess this is why I feel indifferent towards her.

After Li Shu got over her one-sided crush towards Feng Teng, in one day, she realised that the person who she truly loves is her and Feng Teng childhood best friend, Zheng Qi (Huang Ming). I like Zheng Qi; he has a very different personality to Feng Teng. He is approachable, friendly and always so warm and inviting. While Li Shu has a one-sided crush towards Feng Teng, Zheng Qi has a one-sided love towards Li Shu. However, Li Shu got over her feelings for Feng Teng and reciprocated Zheng Qi’s feelings. I just never really felt anything for this couple. The turnaround of feelings was very abrupt and it made it seem like Zheng Qi was just Li Shu’s rebound! Not to mention, they were very quick to head down the aisle!

Boss & MeShan Shan has a very good relationship with her cousin Xue Liu Liu (Annie Shi) and girlfriend Lu Shuang Yi (Wang Ting). I love close they all are! They are able to discuss everything and anything and they give each other the uttermost support and genuine advice. I just love how they can depend on each other any time and any where. I love their heart-to-heart talks and how they just want the best for each other. Shan Shan might be dating a big boss but neither Liu Liu nor Shuang Yi looked down on her or doubted her relationship with him. Instead, they supported her and helped her out with her relationship woes.

Liu Liu is a very smart girl. She is just bogged down by her mother’s wishes and because she is an adopted child, she feels guilt towards her mother which is why she will do what her mother wants her to do despite not being very keen on it. She wants to be a free bird and chase after her passion but instead she is a trapped bird inside a cage. When Feng Teng gave her the opportunity that would be able to set her free, she took upon his chance but is once again bogged down due to her bastard of a boyfriend. However, she didn’t give up and continued to pursue her dream alongside Shan Shan. Although Liu Liu was only a minor character, but the drama did a very good job in developing her and Annie herself gave an excellent portrayal of Liu Liu given that this is her first drama.

I absolutely adored the directing and composition of the drama. That was for me what really made the drama as sweet as it is. It told the story beautifully and it in every way captured the many moments with tender, love and care. I just loved how the drama flowed from start to finish with very, very pretty cinematography. Whether it be the setting, the props or the fashion, they were just all so pretty! I was reading and stumbled upon this post that explains all about the fashion. Definitely check it out! I felt that the OST was perfect here. There’s four main songs but they were used in moderation and at the appropriate time and now I just have those four songs stuck on replay.

Although I have yet to read the novel, judging from what I have seen from the drama, I feel like it is a really good novel adaptation. I really love that it retains the novel aspect to it in the sense it is Shan Shan telling her story rather than the drama telling her story. I’ve read a fair share of novels and have seen the drama/movie adaptations where the titular character’s point-of-view gets washed away in favour of letting the drama/movie doing the talking. However, we get to know what Shan Shan is thinking and I really love that because I feel like this gets more out of the novel. I like that we get to hear Shan Shan’s subconscious thinking not only through her voiceovers but also through the animations, making her doubts and insecurities relatable. When reading novels, it is these thoughts that allow us to get to know the titular character better so having these thoughts portrayed on-screen, it allows us to get to know Shan Shan better.

Boss & Me was a great drama that was filled with fluff. It was so much fun to watch Shan Shan and Feng Teng fall in love with each other. It breaks away from the stereotypical socioeconomic storylines and instead tells of a Cinderella-like fairytale. It’s just a very sweet drama and I am still reeling from having finished it! I want more from it!

I love this drama despite all the plot holes, if that makes sense, hahaha! Because it’s just full of fluffy cuteness. Zhao Li-Ying is extremely cute as Shan Shan (although It took me some time to get used to her thick eyebrows, hahaha!) I watched a few of her dramas but I never fell in love with her until Shan Shan comes, just so cute and enjoyable to watch. I really appreciate that they kept the angst to very minimal so the cute part overpowers those draggy angst.

Ahahaha, yes I get ya! looool, I’ve heard all about Shan Shan’s thickly drawn eyebrows before I started the drama so that really stood out to me.

Same here, and I loved that it wasn’t the usual money problems!

There are 3 other cdramas that I’ve watched that enter the neighborhood of Boss & Me
    1. Someone Like You
    2. Be With You
    3. Singles Villa
    4. Then of course there is Fated To Love You cdrama version.
Boss and Me ranks higher than all of these with me, HOWEVER, these others are right next door and that’s more than good enough for me. Some Like You is the closest I’ve found yet to Boss & Me.
How could I leave without mention of ISWAK (it started with a kiss 1&2) Especially 2. IMO cdrama has the best version. Kdrama has the desperately trying version. Youtube has manga and the original version which I actually hate. okay…dislike to the 100th degree.
Continue to enjoy this happy drama habit that helps you escape from reality for as long as you want. lolol

Just One thing though, there is no challenging twists that happens in their love story. It a bit predictable. And, there is no much highlights to Feng Teng’s love to Shan shan. The drama is so long and I feel like there is just a bit something that is missing to their relationship to make it more realistically acceptable. I give it 7 out of 10 thouh. 🙂

One thing for sure is Li Shu definitely doesnt have good intentions towards shan shan . she is so proud of herself that she thinks that shan shan is no match to her. ever time she “helps” shan shan it is to look down on her. She isnt exactly spending all her time plotting against them because she thinks too highly of herself to go down to that level. Thats why she didnt confess to Feng Teng because she thought he should be the first to confess to her. Unfortunately for her Feng Teng falls for the humble Shan Shan
