The Time We Were Not In Love Episode 2 Recap:

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 6.35.14 pmHa Na narrates “The important reversals of our lives will come at any time without warning”. She is feeling the aftermath of the wedding disaster at work as her colleagues corner her and give her disapproving looks. Ho Joon’s bride is not just any bride but the president’s niece. She then finds herself walking backwards and almost falling down to the train tracks. The only thing keeping her from falling is her superior’s tie which gets cut…

She wakes up and realises that it was a nightmare.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 6.37.25 pm While she waits for her coffee, she calls Won blaming him for causing her nightmare, leading them to bicker. She sighs and wonders if she should take a few days off work but Won advises her to not take office rumours so serious. While she is on the phone, a mysterious handsome guy takes notice of her. As she heads out, the guy chases after her and returns the paper she left behind. He asks her if she remembers him and this conversation starter is clearly more important than her phone call with Won as she abruptly hangs up the phone on him.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 6.38.56 pmShe has no memory of this young guy and contemplates if he is hitting on her. She thanks him for returning her papers and walks off with a strut, one foot after the other.

Ha Na’s jolly morning does not extend to work as she gets reprimanded by her superior for not successfully selling the shoes that was supposed to be endorsed by the actress. She cools him down by promising to deliver at the next shoe launch.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 6.46.36 pmHa Na is back at her desk, but under it as she looks for her missing glasses. Assistant Hong arrives with her the new marketing intern who is none other than the guy, Gi Seong Jae (Infinite’s L), Ha Na met earlier at the coffee shop. She suddenly has a trigger of memory. She has met Seong Jae before, at the department store when he helped her to manoeuvre a tall pile of shoe boxes. He even looked back and gave her a dazzling smile. She keeps sneaking glances at him while trying not to get caught.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 8.27.39 pmSo Eun seems to winning the favour of her male colleagues as she gets each their perfect coffee, while the male flight attendants are discussing how the cold and cynical Won and So Eun would make such a perfect couple. Won keeps things business and tells them to hush up before they get more crazy thoughts. So Eun doesn’t seem to be winning sunbae Mi Hyang’s favour as she got her a smoothie when she wanted coffee. All the males except for Won immediately offer her their coffee. LOL.

Ha Na and her new intern head down to the department store for some work. On the lift ride down, she thanks him for help last time. He smiles as he tells her that he thought she was his age which is why he tried to hit on her earlier today. Now that he is her intern, he promises that he will work diligently.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 8.30.42 pmAs soon as the pair arrive down to the department store, an angry customer storms in with a pair of shoes, demanding for a refund. Ha Na placates the customer by getting down to the reason why the customer finds the shoes uncomfortable and kindly offers to customise the shoes for the customer, which was more enough to make the customer happy again. This was so not how You Qing handled the situation. Seong Jae watches and is thoroughly impressed with how Ha Na handled the situation.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 8.32.24 pmHa Na and Seong Jae are in the storage room and he vocalises his awe in the situation earlier. Seong Jae sees Ha Na in heels and offers to grab the shoes instead. As she climbs down the ladder, the two find themselves in an unnaturally close proximity. He smiles and lets her go pass.

Ha Na is working overtime. Seong Jae drops by some snacks and charmingly tells her that it is dangerous for a woman to be alone so he will be just outside and she can call him any time. She just nods her head.

On the way home, Ha Na calls Won to tell him all about her new intern who is only 26 and how he waited for her while she worked overtime. She tells him that under normal circumstances, she would have scolded him but she didn’t. He tells her that there is no way Seong Jae would see her as a woman. She bites back that he must be jealous that her love life seems to be moving ahead while his seems to be stagnant. He shoots back that his is very popular but Ha Na doesn’t believe it.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 8.34.02 pmImmediately after hanging up, So Eun calls out to Won. They sit together on the bus and their colleagues are giving them the thumbs up while Won dismisses them. So Eun courageous offers to by Won dinner in order to thank him from saving her from the incident last time. Thinking about Ha Na’s words about him not being popular, he agrees.

So Eun and Won are having a Korean bbq of some sort. She extends some food to feed him. He declines, stating that he can feed himself but gives in after her persistence.

Ha Na is searching up the information of where her MIA Yeon Gyeong actress may be when she receives a message from Seong Jae concerning about whether she got home safely. She responds with a yes and he types back with “I’ll see you tomorrow then. <3″ This gets her thinking about whether there was any romantic meaning behind the texts but brushes it off.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 8.35.00 pmBack at So Eun and Won’s dinner, she finds out that her idol Mi Hyang and Won are actually cousins. She sighs with jealousy of his close relationship with Mi Hyang. She is an only child and has no one whom she can call endearing names. She suggests, or literally gives herself the privilege, to call Won “oppa”. He doesn’t know how to respond so she takes it as a yes.

Then, Ha Na calls and So Eun deliberately uses this chance to call Won “oppa”. Ha Na takes it that he is dating at work but he claims that So Eun is just joking around and agrees to continue their conversation later. So Eun, curious, asks if a relationship between a man and a woman really just be friendship? He confirms that it is possible. She is all smiles and admits that if it true then this means he does not have a girlfriend and even if it is not, this means he is consciously lying for he.

Ha Na cannot believe that Won has someone to call him “oppa”. Meanwhile, Won is walking home and pondering over So Eun’s question about whether it is possible for only friendship to exist between a man and a woman.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 8.38.00 pmFlashback. Won and Ha Na are both dressing themselves up for a blind dating event that they do not know of either attending. They head out and run into each other. They make up excuses with both heading in opposite directions. They find themselves together on the same table and shoot telepathic messages to one another. The main event kicks in and the rule is that the girls are to place something on the table and the boys are to choose the item and they will be paired off with that person to go on a date.

Ha Na excuses herself to use the bathroom and gives Won the eye to come out and meet her. She shows him the scrunchie that she is going to place and he promises not to pick it.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 8.52.04 pmHa Na and her friend happened to both place scrunchies of a similar color and design. Won has trouble differing between the two and just dives for one. He ends up picking Ha Na’s and so they are paired off for a date. Their date is at a video arcade where Ha Na is multitasking on winning the game while calling Won out as stupid for being unable to differ between the two scrunchies. Despite that, the two appeared to have a very fun date filled with lots of beautiful memories.

Won snaps back into reality and takes a look through his past high school photos. His gaze saddens when they land on the The One-Eyed Fish’s Love book.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 8.54.18 pmHo Joon and Min Ji are back from from their honeymoon. Min Ji has left Ha Na with a souvenir. Ha Na musters up the courage to face Min Ji once and for all, but ducks out at the last minute, hiding behind a pillar.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 8.55.45 pmThe Yeon Gyeong hunt is not a success, but Ha Na and Seong Jae are still waiting well into the night. Ha Na wonders why how Yeon Gyeong hasn’t appeared despite all these hours passing. Seong Jae comments that he understands as he was previously in a similar situation. He wanted to hide when his girlfriend broke up with him. The story gets more interesting but Ha Na lefts out an accidentally fart. Seong Jae, being the gentleman he is, proceeds to continue on with the story while Ha Na opens the window and comments that she wants to feel the air. Sure, sure. Seong Jae drops Ha Na off and even goes to open the door for her.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 8.56.09 pmIt’s the weekend and what better way to lounge around in your pj’s, watch dramas in your messy room and munch on food? Mama Oh comes into Ha Na’s room and berates her for her mess. Mama has kindly chopped Ha Na up some watermelons but Ha Na is too engrossed with her dramaing to even look to see where the plate is so Mama has to push the plate to her.

Downstairs, Ha Na’s family is discussing how pathetic Ha Na’s love life is and has ideas to set her up with Won.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 8.59.10 pmHa Na’s contemplating about her love life too. Chu Sung Hoon? Too out of her league. Yoon Sang Hyun? Too popular with women and already married. Ohn Joo Wan? Too cold-hearted and vain. Seong Jae? Too young. Won? Impossible.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 9.00.03 pmHa Na heads downstairs and Won’s there. Ha Na’s family has gone all the way for this arranged date, plating up the food in love heart shape. Ha Na and Won dump the heart shaped rice into a big bowl and eat take scoops out as they watch TV. She asks him about his new girlfriend but he reiterates that So Eun is just a hoobae who likes to play around. He asks her what Seong Jae calls her. She replies “Team Leader” and goes on to argue that formalities define a man and woman’s relationship. He replies that he is fine with being called “oppa” while she argues that she wouldn’t if she was called “noona” at work; she separates love from work.

Ha Na and Won get an errand to go on a grocery run for Mi Hyang, with Won pushing the trolley and Ha Na shopping for the food. They then get forced to help Mi Hyang make food for her idol. Ha Na comments to Mi Hyang that if she was Mir, she’d marry her. Mi Hyang isn’t discouraged by the age difference as it is just a number to her. This gets Ha Na thinking.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 9.13.45 pmSo Eun sees an elderly woman struggling with her luggage and offers to help despite the fact that it being clearly too heavy for her. Won sees and takes over the job instead. So Eun offers to pull his luggage for him when he points out that she left hers behind so she has to go back to retrieve it.

Ha Na and Seong Jae accidentally touch hands at work. Noticing Ha Na in her heels, Seong Jae grabs her wrist and offers to get the shoes instead, which Ha Na allows. This lands them in close proximity once again.

At the end of the day, he thoughtfully borrows a pair of comfy slippers for Ha Na to wear and walks her home.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 9.17.10 pmAs they reach her house, Won, having just taken out the rubbish, spots Ha Na and Seong Jae. More importantly, he notices Seong Jae holding onto Ha Na’s heels. Ha Na and Seong Jae are having a nice convo and he slips out a “noona”, stating they are no longer at work so she’s no longer his team leader and he’s not an intern. The two finally notice Won. Some introductions occur and Won goes to say something but Ha Na squeezes his arm to stop him from saying any more. After Seong Jae leaves, the bffl decides to grab some food.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 9.19.06 pmThe bffl begin discussing Seong Jae. Won thinks Ha Na is falling for the intern but and was swayed by his usage of “noona”. She doesn’t deny it but has no comeback reply. Won changes the topic and wonders whether he should start preparing to pay up his bet now but Ha Na replies she will only accept a lump sum. The two get into from friendly fight.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 9.23.00 pmWon’s flight unexpectedly got cancelled. It’s pouring outside and Ha Na can’t help but watch Mi Jin get picked up by Ho Joon while she has no one. She places her bag over her head and begins a run through the rain, then feels shelter. Seong Jae has come to pick her up with an umbrella. Meanwhile, Won is making his way over to her but gets stopped when So Eun calls out to him.

Screen Shot 2015-07-04 at 9.23.36 pmFlashback. This time it’s from Won’s perspective. Won is standing behind a brick wall and checking his watch and pops out the exact moment Ha Na comes out. They play their daily game and his loses. On the backpiling game, Ha Na almost topples over but Won extends his hand out to steady her. On the group blind date, he clearly took notice of her scrunchie before they headed in their opposite direction.

_______

My Opinion:

Ha Na and Won’s personalities are more set in place right now and it is clear they do not have the personalities as dominant as their counterparts. I find that in this remake the writers are trying to tweak too much with what I loved so much about You Qing and Da Ren. You Qing was a very stubborn and headstrong character and only Da Ren could withstand this temper of hers. Here, Ha Na doesn’t have that hot; she had s much warmer personality that is easily likeable. This was very apparent when the customer came storming in demanding for a refund; Ha Na took the path of placating the customer while You Qing was not afraid to argue with customer. Furthermore, Ha Na has this aegyo to her that the headstrong You Qing would not ever possess even if she tried. Won is a lot more assertive than Da Ren, whereas Da Ren was quite passive in letting his feelings and actions show. If I were to see Ha Na and Won as standalone, fresh characters, I would have a much likeable opinion of them. I do like them but they have You Qing and Da Ren standing as their benchmark and they were impeccably written.

It’s interesting that we got to see the flashback played out from Won’s point-of-view. Won has done a lot more for Ha Na than what we initially thought. Ever since their high school days, he has been looking out for her through his little actions such as waiting for her and going to school together. What I am more curious about though is why he purposely told Ha Na that he could not love her when he was quite aware of his impending heart. Did he purposely neglect himself to the friendzone?

Ha Na and Won have had a friendship of 20 years but I don’t feel like they are that close. Certainly, they have a sense of comfort and naturalness between them but it’s not to the point where they can openly do anything with one another. Despite how the drama tries to push for that, I don’t quite feel it in that way because I think the drama was more focused on using that to establish Ha Na and Won’s friendship rather than to set the overall tone of the drama.

Now that the intro is done with, we are onto the meat of the story, which will hopefully be fun to watch. I am all for remakes as there is no two dramas exactly the same and it will be interesting to see how this version chooses to continue to adapt the original.
