The Time We Were Not In Love Episode 5 Recap:
It’s the summer of 2011. Ha Na calls Won to cancel on their high school friends date on her behalf because she is at the airport to pick up Seo Hoo, who very suddenly alerted her of his surprise arrival. Won is not too impressed to hear that she dropped everything just to pick up Seo Hoo.
Ha Na is very happy to see Seo Hoo who immediately embraces her into a lovely kiss.
Back in 2015, Won clearly sees Seo Hoo waiting for Ha Na but pulls Ha Na away from seeing Seo Hoo and suggest that they go to eat at the restaurant today.
Ha Na tells Won of Jeong Mi’s break up with her boyfriend, saying how she thinks Jeong Mi will re-light the fire with her boyfriend. Won doesn’t think it is that simple to restart a relationship. He thinks that once a relationship is over, it is over for good and throws her the question if she can restart a relationship with someone she broke up with? She tells him that the question is not why they broke up but how deep of a relationship they had. Won recalls seeing Seo Hoo earlier outside their houses and realises she implies that it is possible for her to do so.
Won’s phone buzzes and reads that So Eun wants to go on another date with him. He doesn’t reply and instead proceeds to make weekend plans with Ha Na.
Seo Hoo didn’t get to meet with Ha Na and this has impacted on his mood. He returns to the music stage and throws his negative mood on the backstage crew for having not gotten everything set-up yet despite his earlier than expected arrival.
So Eun has come to join Ha Na and Won on their biking adventure. She has even brought food along for them to eat later on. Won is shocked to see her joining them and she explains that because he did not reply to her text, she came to ask her Ha Na unni to take her with them. In a little flashback, at work So Eun asks why Won did not reply to her text. He explains that he made friends with Ha Na and merely sees her as his hoobae while she tells him that she sees him as her dating partner.
They go to depart. Ha Na goes to take the passenger seat but instead offers it to So Eun.
Turns out So Eun has only ever rode on a tricycle so she gets to ride on a tandem bike with her oppa. Ha Na surpasses So Eun and Won and teases him by pulling a face.
After some riding, the trio sit down for a picnic. So Eun hands Won an immunity boosting snack of some sort but he extends it to Ha Na. Ha Na and Won are overly impressed with So Eun’s cooking skills, especially with her kimbap. Won eats it first then Ha Na who tells him that it contains burdock. So Eun learns that Won does not like burdock because it is sticky. So Eun comments to Ha Na and Won that they look like siblings, confirming to her that a man and a woman can really just be friends.
Dae Bok informs his sister that the shoes she bought him is too old-fashioned so he is going to exchange it for something else. He has his eyes on this pair of shoes which Assistant Hong also has her eyes on. The two engage in an intense tug-of-war with Assistant Hong winning out. Dae Bok comments that her boyfriend must be really lucky.
The trio are at a batting cage. Won hits the balls one after the other while the two ladies watch, cheering him on. He suggests Ha Na to give it a go too but she declines. Under Won and So Eun’s encouragement, she gives him but her batting skills are no where near as good as Won as she misses all her hits. Won steps him and guides her how to properly hit the ball, much to jealousy of So Eun.
So Eun wants to give it a go too and asks Won to personally guide her as well. He tells her to go grab a bat and just hit with all her strength when the ball comes. Turns out she has quite the skill in this kind of sport. Ha Na’s phone rings but she is too busy to hear it.
Won tells Ha Na to just admit she can’t bat but she promises to beat him in baseball one day. He suggests they leave because he received a call from her mother. They drop So Eun home first who can’t bear to part with her oppa before they head home themselves. Seeing Ha Na bored in the backseat, Won pulls some fish-blowing, funny faces in the rear mirror. Ha Na recognises that face to be the same as the one he pulled less than 100 days before the SAT uni entrance exams when he learned that his mother had run away.
Young Won and Ha Na are having dinner up on the rooftop. He comments that Julia Roberts is really pretty, pretty for taking care of kids that are not biologically hers.
Mi Hyang is drama-watching and comments on the female lead as being selfish for leaving her someone for her lover but then calling every time she is in trouble. Won replies that this person is his mother.
The Oh household are drooling while waiting for Mama Oh to cook up the pancake. As they get ready to eat, Mama stops them and instructs Ha Na to invite Won over. However Ha Na tells them that it is better to leave him alone for now. They then focus their attention on Dae Bok and nit pick on his life goals and all of a sudden he doesn’t like the attention that is on him.
Won is really out of it when he notices some green and red neon lights. A call comes from Ha Na confirms that she is source of the lights. The two have their teasing kind of convo which immediately brightens up Won’s sunken mood.
As soon as Ha Na arrives to work, Assistant Hong comes crying and apologising for having ordered the wrong shoe size so the product placement shooting was not able to go ahead. Ha Na gets reprimanded as seeing Assistant Hong in tears, she narrates that the tears were once her weapon too but now they just mean incompetency.
Seo Hoo rocks up at Won’s office, unannounced. The meeting is tense with Seo Hoo here just to know whether Won and Ha Na are more than just friends. Won doesn’t give a straight-forward answer but Seo Hoo doesn’t need one. Won grabs Seo Hoo by the shoulder and warns him to not toy with Ha Na’s feelings because he will never let her waver for a guy like him. Seo Hoo rebuts that he doesn’t have the power to do that and Won seemingly knows that what Seo Hoo said was the truth.
Ha Na returns to her office and sees a giant pink bunny sitting on her chair given to her by an anonymous admirer. Won advises her to dispose of it, claiming that it could cause her harm, while sensing that it is from Seo Hoo. Ha Na doesn’t like that idea; she likes the bunny and this is her first time receiving a stuffed animal as a gift.
Won does his best to keep Ha Na out longer, not wanting her to go home to find Seo Hoo. After his best effort, they return home with Won keeping a stern eye out for Seo Hoo.
Mama is shocked to see a giant pink bunny walking through her home but tells her to rest up. The parents sigh about their still single daughter. Mama brings up how heartbroken was after she broke up with Seo Hoo and Papa doesn’t like the sound of Seo Hoo. Papa just wants his daughter to live well.
Once comfortable, Ha Na messages Won letting him know that the bunny is all good.
So Eun is out to score some brownie points, first with favouring Mi Hyang. She creates some delicious appetisers and immediately bombards her with a bunch of questions such as what foods Won likes to eat, what he likes to do, what kind of girls he likes etc. The answers all revolve around Ha Na.
Mi Hyang truthfully tells her that she doesn’t know what kind of girls Won likes but adds that Won probably likes a girl who won’t leave him, one who he can take care of and protect. His original goal was to become a movie director but had to give that up to face reality.
Ha Na is busy at work when Seo Hoo arrives, unannounced, grabs her by the wrist and tells her that they are going shopping. He will wear her company’s brand of clothing and shoes but she has to be the one to pick it out for him.
Ha Na does her best to decline but he drags her out anyways. Once alone, she breaks free of his hold while he just completely ignores her feelings and compliments her on her looks. He reaches for her face but she pushes his hand aside. He laughs and says her personality has not changed one bit. She tells him that she will not be going with him but he doesn’t seem to have heard that, instead telling her that he missed her, a lot.
He reveals that he was the one who sent the bunny and asks her to remember why he would send the bunny to her.
Won arrives at work so see his colleagues digging around in the drainpipe for a ring. Won is still bothered by why Seo Hoo would gift Ha Na a bunny as a gift and asks his colleagues for advice. The colleague who dropped the ring tells him that there is no price tag on love and Seo Hoo probably wanted to restart his romance with Ha Na on a good note.
Ha Na is up at the rooftop and disappears into her past memories. Looks like Ha Na was once engaged to be married with Seo Hoo with Won as one of the guests in attendance. Ha Na wakes up from her memories and finds Won standing over her.
She reveals that Seo Hoo has returned and sighs how he is still the same selfish, arrogant guy. Won firmly tells her that she can’t be with Seo Hoo. She tells him that she knows but that isn’t enough for him. He told her the same thing last time but she didn’t acknowledge that Seo Hoo was a bastard when he left her all alone. She only acknowledged it when he left her and completely ruined her.
Ha Na’s memories continues. Ha Na is the alone at the wedding with Won the only one still by her side.
Ha Na and Won are called down by Mama to eat. Mama makes talk about how Ha Na will be an old spinster with that bunny of hers. Ha Na heads to her room and thinks of Mama’s talk and makes herself a promise that she won’t try to remember why Seo Hoo sent her the bunny.
Won is, too, thinking. Won is out with his and Ha Na’s high school friends talking about how hung up Ha Na is over Seo Hoo. He suddenly receives a call from Ha Na telling him that she is free to hang out with them because Seo Hoo got pulled in for a meeting. But what Won sees is Seo Hoo in the arms of multiple girls.
The next day Ha Na is especially tentative of how she looks. She double-checks herself in the mirror and opts for a pair of killer stilettos instead of a comfy sneakers.
Meanwhile, So Eun seems to be in pain, something Won sees.
Ha Na goes about with her daily work and wonders if there is any special visitors for her but there is none. What is does receive is a bouquet of flowers from Seo Hoo with a card telling her that he will come pick her up tonight for dinner. She throws out the card and then asks her assistant to dispose of the flowers.
Won has brought So Eun some medicine and vitamins. She asks him to continue to take care of her and she’ll take care of him in return. He tells her that it is only natural for him to take care of his hoobae.
Ha Na skips out on her company dinner with her heart clearly waiting for a particular someone. Won messages her, inviting her out for the movies. She considers declining but fishes out the card she threw. She contemplates some more before saying yes to Won. Immediately after she sends that message, she receives one from Seo Hoo informing her that he will be late tonight but tells her to wait because he has something important to tell her.
Flashback to Ha Na’s memories. As the wedding guests left one by one, Won was the only one who remained by her side. She voiceovers that she left the important things at an important place but completely forgot where that place was.
So Ha Na waits. Won waits too. He goes to watch the movie alone but seeing the empty seat next to him, he decides to go look for Ha Na instead. He calls her but she just lets it ring out.
Won starts to run and finally reaches Ha Na. He asks her why she didn’t come but already knew the answer. He thought she knew better to get hurt again by a bastard like Seo Hoo. She tells him that she knows Seo Hoo is a bad guy but he said he had something important to tell her. She didn’t get to hear anything when Seo Hoo left her; she just wants to hear an apology or even an explanation. Also, she wants to know why he sent her the bunny.
Won is convinced the there is something bad inside the bunny and drags her by the wrist, determined to rip up the bunny.
Waiting for them is none other than Seo Hoo. Seo Hoo apologises for being late and making her wait. Won protectively pulls Ha Na behind her and tells Seo Hoo to get lost but Seo Hoo doesn’t seem fazed and instead pulls a smile.
This ep was all about introducing Seo Hoo and bringing him into the bigger picture. With that comes a bunch of mysteries, particularly that of what happened between Ha Na and Seo Hoo and why their relationship ended the way it did. His reappearance is not well liked by the people around Ha Na and Won but he is back for one reason and one reason only – Ha Na. He might have broken her heart once but he is prepared to heal it. I quite like how his reappearance is clouded with a bunch of questions and how these questions are slowly being answered as Ha Na goes through her wounds.
There’s a lot going on between Ha Na and Won, and their relationship which has been platonic for a for well over 17 years is no longer platonic. They have feelings for one another that is romantic though for Ha Na it is not yet that prevalent. She still sees him as a friend, something that has had for Won since highschool while for Won, Seo Hoo reappearance has finally had his feelings cracked. He has become more protective of Ha Na, protective her from getting hurt again by Seo Hoo. He has become her shield and she has become even more like the type of girl Won wants – a girl who he can protect.
Seo Hoo might be a jerk but I am shipping him with Ha Na! There is nothing that we know about him but my instincts tell me to ship him with Ha Na. Also, there is part of me that feels Won and Ha Na should not be together. Not that they are not right for each other but for the fact that Seo Hoo is the kind of guy to push Ha Na to achieve greater and better. Won complements Ha Na whereas Seo Hoo’s way of loving her helps her to become stronger as a person.
Poor So Eun being neglected to the second lead with no development whatsoever. She is crazy in love with Won and very vocal about her heart and unafraid to take the initiative to pursue Won but it is not getting her anywhere closer to Won. I do like that while she is very persistent with her heart, she doesn’t push Won to fall in love with her and neither does she result to underhand methods to make him fall for her. So Eun knows what her heart wants and is very vocal about it, unafraid to take the initiative to pursue her heart. Her method of love makes quite unlikeable as a character but I really appreciate her down-earth personality.
It is quite clear by now that Won will not be able to be with So Eun. He sees her as his hoobae and nothing more because his heart is elsewhere. He is in love with Ha Na and has been for half of his life but for some reason he has neglected himself to the best friend position, most probably because he is afraid to break their friendship. But now he is ready to step past that boundary.
